Guernsey-Sunrise Jr. Sr. High School is a small rural school located in southeastern Wyoming right on the Oregon Trail. We have about 110 students in grades 7-12.
Due to our size we have a rather small staff as well as a somewhat traditional curriculum. However, we do have a very strong technology base and are expanding these efforts in a variety of ways. Some of the key concepts you will hear about as you traverse our building are reading and writing in the content area; silent, sustained reading; literature circles; intervention time; Viking period; 1-to-1 initiatives; data-driven decision making, and formative assessments. None of these practices are stand-alone ideas, but together they make for very powerful school improvement efforts designed to maximize student growth.
Another unique aspect of our school is the concept of Presentations of Learning (POL) in front of the Board of Trustees. All of our graduates go through a POL/Senior Exit interview prior to graduation. During this interview, they bring forth their Body of Evidence to prove they have the knowledge and skills necessary for graduation and life beyond. We know it is nearly impossible to know what skills and abilities students will need in their future, but we are doing all we can to adapt to the rapidly changing world around us. If you have questions about our school or anything in our community, feel free to stop in, call, or drop me an email.
